MACAM is not a conventional museum contained only within galleries. The Museu de Arte Contemporânea Armando Martins connects a private collection, an eighteenth-century Lisbon palace, a contemporary extension, gardens, a chapel, cultural programming, and a hotel where original works continue into guest spaces.
The partner context
MACAM opened to the public on 22 March 2025 in Lisbon’s Alcântara–Belém cultural district. According to the museum, the Armando Martins Collection spans the late nineteenth century to the present and contains more than 600 works across painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, and installation.
The institution describes itself as “The House of Private Collections.” Its permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, public program, historic architecture, site-specific works, garden, chapel, hospitality spaces, and hotel create several legitimate ways to enter the MACAM story.
